Modern colonization seems to be a taboo subject when it comes to global politics.
In school, we learn all about the detrimental impacts of imperialism in the 1800s (the scramble for Africa, the British East India Company, etc). We are taught that colonialism is a thing of the past, but it is still an ongoing issue in current times. Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands are just a few of many still colonized areas. Even past colonized territories still face repercussions of colonial rule. Current colonialism faces many similar circumstances that we have deemed unethical in the past, so why is it still being practiced?
My name is Naomi Smoyer and I am the president of the Yorktown high school club Voices for Liberation. Club members will collectively use this platform to shed light on the issues of colonization throughout the world. We will also include pieces on potential solutions and courses of action for the issues faced by colonized areas. With this blog, we aim to stimulate this long overdue discussion to spread awareness and work towards finally ending colonialism.
